Description
In November 2021, publisher and artist Robert Violette spent several weeks at Masseria Pernice. I selected this figure because he has for many years managed to speak superbly for a great range of clients, and I thought he might work in a soft way, with the de la Tour family, that has equal strengths to offer. His extrarodinary and almost invisible skills makes Violette the perfect interlocutor for Executive Producer and fellow artist, Paolo Sallier de la Tour.
The residency is a conversation between figures that see themselves as creators and also stewards. Between people who have a moral responsibilty to tell the truth and do the right thing. Between actors on a stage that is life, always cognizant of responsibilities, not only to a place, but to people, and other living things. The commissions and professional challenges that Robert Violette has faced in his long and illustrious career run the gamut from re-branding emeralds to creating legacy for early career artists like Jeff Koons. His ability to spot talent and frame it in unusual and gripping ways make him more than an editor and publisher. He is a narrator, a storyteller, able to riff between images and soundbites, between long text and poetic bursts, between communication blasts and colophon pages, with utter ease. In fact, the talent of Violette far outstrips the book medium and it is his very curiousity about music and the making of art which leads him to explore these too, and know the process from deep within.
For these residencies, I select professionals I admire, people I think are the best in what they do, and people who can do nothing, and find repose in non-making, and non-production, as well, of course, as exploring the possibilities of materials, studio, freedom, and time.
This is the contribution of Vioette to Masseria Pernice, and to the highly creative and artistic people who guide and run this historic property. In the great tradition of an activist and embedded art, his residency has once again yielded creation, through art, poetry, philosophy, music, and a sense of place.

Biography
Robert Violette è un’Artista, editore e produttore con sede a Londra. Nato a Lowell, Massachussets, Robert ha studiato sia negli States che in Inghilterra. Egli porterà le sue conoscenze su entrambe le culture a Pernice, Sicilia, come Artista Residente, nella Primavera 2020. Definendo i criteri di pubblicazione dei programmi delle gallerie moderne, dal 1988 al 1995 Robert ha editato e prodotto pubblicazioni alla Anthony d’Offay Gallery di Londra per molteplici Artisti di grande rilievo, tra cui Gilbert & George, Ellsworth Kelly, Anselm Kiefer, Richard Long e Gerhard Richter. Nel 1991, Robert ha prodotto e co-editato la prima pubblicazione di Jeff Koons, “The Jeff Koons Handbook”, e, nel 1995 , la collezione di scritti di Bill Viola, “Reasons for knocking at an Empty House”, tutt’oggi in stampa. Nel 1995 ha fondato la Violette Editions, sua personale casa editrice, dove ha creato svariate pubblicazioni degne di nota, tra cui il primo libro di Damien Hirst, “I Want To Spend the Rest of My Life Everywhere, with Everyone, One to One, Always, Forever, Now”, così come “The Words” di Gilbert e George, Leigh Bowery, Sophie Calle: “Double Game” , Louise Bourgeois : “Destruction of the Father/Reconstruction of the Father, Paul Smith: “You Can find Inspiration in Anything e Annette Message: “Word for Word. Le sue pubblicazioni più recenti includono Tom Dixon: “Dixonary”, Micheal Clark e Sarah Jones. Al di fuori della Violette Editions, Robert ha prodotto ed editato “Lucian Freud Drawings” (Prestel) e “Hussein Chalayan” (Rizzoli), ha inoltre creatosi una solida reputazione consigliando clienti su pubblicazioni cardine per vari brand di moda come Kvadrat, Swarovski, Tate, Lisson Gallery e il leggendario “Hotel il Pellicano”. Con le sue monografie “Emerald” e “Ruby” (e nel 2021, “Sapphire”); ha radicalmente trasformato il concetto dei libri sulle gemme e la gioielleria. Le capacità di Robert come editore includono una forte capacità nel riconoscere il talento, dopo decadi nell’avanguardia, oltre ad un orecchio attento per le tendenze in molteplici campi. Dotato di grande poliedricità esprime le proprie armonie interiori in svariati modi, tra cui l’Arte Visiva, che approccia tramite i progetti editoriali. Ha un particolare interesse per la musica e l’Arte Performativa. Nel 2005 è stato egli stesso un finalista dell’ Oxford Samuel Beckett Theater Trust Award e, dal 2014, ha inoltre lavorato come consulente finanziario per il London’s Block Universe performance art festival. La Residenza d’Artista Pernice ospiterà Robert nel contesto della propria tradizione pastorale e agricola. Robert e il padrone di casa, l’artista Paolo Sallier de La Tour, scambieranno idee ed intuizioni, nella poetica cornice della campagna Siciliana, nella consacrata simbiosi Rinascimentale tra la consulenza artistica e intellettuale e la cultura del territorio.
